I don't like the idea of 'dog' too much as it IMO violates the 'do one thing and do it well' philosophy that most of the UN*X tools have.
Yes I also don't like it. But there are too much people that don't give a shit on UNIX philosophy. Its also an easy thing to provide all functionality dog gives with other existing tools.
I would dare to say every Unix kernel violates that philosophy. The funny thing about dog is that even cat is considered bloated:
